Appalachian Gallery was opened in 1987 by former biochemistry professor and PhD David Stelzig. What began as a small two-room shop in Star City, WV has grown into Morgantown's largest framing studio and gallery. Dave graduated from several framing schools and is certified by the Professional Picture Framing Association (PPFA), an organization that sets standards for fine archival framing and keeps its members abreast of new materials and techniques in the field. Stelzig is the only Certified Picture Framer (CPF) in north central West Virginia, and is one of only seven in the state. With his PPFA certification he continues to attend courses and workshops on the latest framing advancements in quality framing.
The staff's experience, knowledge, and fine craftsmanship have earned Appalachian Gallery a reputation for quality and integrity, providing a level of professional custom framing and a body of finely handcrafted regional artwork & crafts unsurpassed in the area. Gallery Director, Laurie Nugent, with a BS in commercial art, has been managing the business since 1995 and has over 15 years experience in the field. She is a highly qualified framing consultant with a natural sense of color and composition. The primary buyer for the gallery, Laurie believes in supporting and promoting the talent in our state, keeping the gallery's focus on West Virginia artists and craftspersons.
With lovely displays of artistry in ambient surroundings that encompass two floors, the gallery's retail location offers a large variety of art & crafts including raku and both wheelthrown & handbuilt stoneware pottery; handwoven vine and reed baskets; wooden utensils, boxes, handmirrors & cutting boards; wrought iron work; hand-quilted and hand-crocheted pieces; mosaic art; handblown glass from Blenko, Hinkle's Dying Art Glassworks, Willow Creek Glass and stained-glass mirrors & plates from Amingo Glass; silver, handbeaded & semi-precious stone jewelry; handmade folk toys and thumb pianos; books, cards & stationery; photographs, oils, watercolors, monoprints, giclees and limited-edition lithographs from regional artists such as Don Whitlatch, Sue Amos, Kevin Arnold, Glen Barnes, Ken Bauer, Celia Deaton, Charlotte Gerlach, William Goebel, Jan & Jonathan Heath, Peggy Isaack, Lotus MacDowell, Linda Schweitzer, and Wolf Creek Printery.
